Find Rest By Surrendering to Fathers Love through letting go of works and embracing humility
Last week we considered the works-and-condemnation cycle as a hindrance to find rest by surrendering to Fathers Love. We considered the idea that there’s actually nothing we can ever truly build for God; He already owns everything. All we can do is open our hearts to love. (Is.66:1-2)
This week let’s consider how we view our heavenly Father. Many people battle oppression and condemnation daily because they don’t view the Father as really loving them.
Measuring Intimacy
How do you measure how close you are to God or how intimate you are with Him?
- By how much you pray?
- How good your worship times are?
- Your obedience?
If you consider how close we are to God from His perspective, it never changes. Closing His heart toward His children is not a technique He uses to discipline them. Growing up, if my dad was upset with me it was best to avoid him until he cooled off. But our heavenly Father is not that way. (Eph.2:8-9)
Seeing God’s True Nature
Often this wrong view of intimacy with God happens because we do not know His true nature. No matter whether you did everything right or wrong today, you can know He still loves you.
Many see God as “the big cop in the sky,” ready to punish every mistake, closing His heart toward us and cutting us off. Even the Gospel is often presented as Father God ready to judge sin harshly and so you’d better call on Jesus quick to escape damnation in hell.
Though it’s true that Father may not like everything thing you do, but He always likes you. There’s nothing you can do to cause God to love you any more than He already loves you and there’s nothing you can do to cause Him to love you any less than He already loves you. Just accept it, He’s crazy about you. So rest in His love.
