Finding Father God’s Nurture to Overcome Mother Pain

Dealing with our mother wounds is a key to living in freedom. It enables us to receive God’s affectionate love.

  • Living Daily in Father God’s Nurture and Affection is Key to Living Free From Counterfeit Affections
  • This living connected to Love fills the void that seeks false comforts.

Mother Wounds

Here’s a story – A young boy’s father was a doctor back in the ‘40s. He loved his dad and wanted to be like him. The only reading he ever did was his dad’s medical books; however, his father died when the boy was 10. Father God's NurtureFrom that age, he began to hate school and find trouble.

His mom remarried and the step-father resented the boy’s presence in the home. It was a constant battle for mom to defend her son. She eventually gave up, taking the side of her new husband against her son. The boy grew up to be an alcoholic and homeless.

Years later he finally crossed paths with a spiritual father who showed him great kindness and eventually helped him get into medical school.

This story deeply touches my heart. I have ministered to countless people whose mothers acted just like the mom in the above story and seen their pain. The good news is there are steps to overcome these mother wounds.

Steps for Overcoming and Connecting to Father God’s Nurture

The first thing a person has to do is to make peace with these hurtful events. This typically involves 3 steps as you examine these events:

1) Resolving lies. The heart has accepted that you are flawed or abandoned. Maybe a specific event stands out as being painful when your step-dad was very demeaning toward you and your mom took his side. Check your heart for any lies that may say this happened because something was wrong with you, or that say you were unprotected and abandoned – even by God. Then pause and listen to receive God’s truth – “You are fearfully and wonderfully made, choosen before the foundation of the world!” “God loves you with an everlasting love and never leaves you!”

2) Release anger. As you look at the hurtful events, you may find there is anger in your heart. That’s okay; it’s quite normal to feel that as a retaliation to the pain. But you need to let go of that anger in your heart. Pray to God to release it.

3) Release sorrow and loss. Sometimes after you release anger, you may also find feelings of loss from the consequences of growing up without the support of loving parents. Whether it was a physical or an emotional loss, there’s an emptiness that comes with a parent “not being there.” Jesus bore our sorrows and griefs on the cross. Release those to Him too.

How to Know If You Are Free

So once you’ve taken these 3 steps, how do you know you are free?

  • You now have compassion and understanding toward your mom. You see that the painful experiences were not about you or your identity in God. They happened from her own pain she had not yet found a way to resolve.
  • Your heart can now easily receive Father God’s Nurture and affection for you.
